Book signing

A book signing for Jan Holt, author of "There’s a Possum in the House, Tales from a Southern Trailer Park," will be Thursday, Aug. 11.

The signing will be at The Briar Patch, 613 North Liberty St., Waynesboro, from 3-5 p.m.

The public is invited.

Food giveaway

The CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority will do a mass food distribution in Burke County 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Burke County Senior Center in Waynesboro and Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Girard Senior/Community Center.

This mass food distribution will be for low-income and elderly persons, serving a total of 600 families in Burke County, and will provide fruits, vegetables, canned meats and juices.

Each family will be provided with one bag of food with up to 14 items. This is a first-come, first-served event.

Persons wishing to receive food must bring a picture ID and know their household size (number of people living in the home) and the monthly income for the family.

Substitute teacher training

The Burke County Board of Education will offer substitute teacher training 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Burke County Board of Education Central Office, 789 Perimeter Road, Waynesboro.

The training is mandatory for persons wishing to be placed on the substitute list. An application should be filed at the Burke County Board of Education Office. It is important that you bring copies of your high school diploma, GED certificate or college transcripts. The copies you bring will remain filed at the Board of Education office.

Fast pitch softball

The Augusta Flash Fast Pitch Girls Travel Team is looking for players interested in playing ASA "A" ball with plenty of college exposure tournaments.

Players must be dedicated, hardworking and willing to play the best competition in the Southeast in 2006.

Beauty pageant

The Old Sardis School Restoration Committee Inc. is now taking application for the Frog Wallow Beauty Pageant to be held Saturday, Sept. 24, at the old S.G.A. High School gym.

Females from the Sardis, Girard and Alexander area who are one month away from being 18 years old and younger are eligible. Applications must be obtained at local businesses in each area or by calling Carol Edmonds at (706) 551-1944 or Ellen Brigham at 569-4765.

The application deadline is Monday, Aug. 22.

Prayer Motorcade

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office will host the fifth annual Prayer Motorcade Saturday, Aug. 13.

The motorcade will meet at the Sheriff’s Office at 9 a.m. for a brief devotion and will then be led to every school in the county where participants will be pray for peace and prosperity in the coming school year.

If you are not able to participate in the entire event and would like to pray for a specific school, the times are as follows:

• Burke County Board of Education – 9:15 a.m.;

• S.G.A. Elementary – 9:35 a.m.;

• Alternative School – 9:55 a.m.;

• Burkehaven – 10:05 a.m.;

• EBA – 10:20 a.m.;

• Mennonite School – 10:35 a.m.;

• The bus shop – 10:45 a.m.;

• Waynesboro Primary School – 10:55 a.m.;

• Blakeney Elementary – 11:05 a.m.;

• Burke County Middle School – 11:15 a.m.; and

• Burke County High School – 11:25 a.m.

These times are estimates so you should probably arrive early.
