Driver killed by train

Darren Lanill Jones, 32, died on impact when the train hit the front passenger side of his GMC Jimmy at the Eighth Street crossing early Sunday morning, according to Waynesboro police investigator Claude Wade.

Jones lived just over the tracks on Lee Street and was reportedly attempting to drive around the crossing arms as the Norfolk Southern train approached at an estimated 45 miles per hour.

His body was found an estimated 75 feet from his vehicle, the report said.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the fatality.

Last March, another Waynesboro man drove into the path of an oncoming train at the Sixth Street crossing but was not seriously injured.
