Earth Day Celebration

Waynesboro’s Downtown Development Authority will hold its annual “What on Earth” festival at the city park this Thursday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m.

The Burke County High School Band will kick off the party, and children are invited to bring clean toys and books to barter in a giant swap.Children will also meet Waynesboro firefighters and explore one of their trucks. Burke County High School technology students will be there to demo the electric vehicle they built in class. The event is free, and hotdogs and concessions will be sold to benefit local Boy Scout pack 414 and DDA’s “Inside Out Grant” program. Easter Egg Hunt

The Burke County Library will host its annual Easter egg hunt, 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 22.There will be 1st 2nd and 3rd prize eggs and free Easter baskets will supplies last. The event is for children under 12 years of age. Healthy Start Consortium Meeting

Enterprise Community Healthy Start will have its Burke County Consortium Meeting 8:30 a.m., Thursday, April 21, at the Burke County Library in Waynesboro.

Topics will include “In the Life of a Special Needs Child,” consumer/agency networking: summer programs and activities, consumer’s highlights: National Healthy Start Conference; Parent2Parent update and the ICC-LC presentation in Washington, D.C. Blood Drive

Shepeard Community Blood Center will hold a blood drive Tuesday, April 26, 1-6 p.m., at the Wardlow Building. Donate and receive a free ticket to the Green Jackets baseball game and a donor t-shirt. WHS Class of ‘58

Waynesboro High School Class of 1958 is planning a class fellowship 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 4, at the home of Katy Lively Powell, located at 3173 Highway 23 South in Waynesboro.

The Waynesboro High School Class of 1981 is currently making plans for its 30th year reunion. Regular meetings will be held the second and fourth Sunday of each month 4 p.m., at the City Park in Waynesboro. The Burke County Public Schools are now accepting referrals for the gifted program, Discovery. The deadline for accepting referrals for students in kindergarten through seventh grade is Friday, April 29. Testing will be held May 2-6.

Parents, guardians, teachers, administration, counselors and other individuals who have knowledge of the student’s abilities may refer the student. A student with an ITBS score in the 90th percentile or a CRCT score at or above 900 is eligible for automatic referral to the program. The Early Head Start program, located at 518 College Street in Waynesboro, will have open enrollment to receive applications for the 2011-2012 school year for children 8 weeks to 3 years old. Open enrollment will be 1-4 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 28 and 29, Monday and Tuesday, May 2 and 3.

All applications must have the following documents to be considered complete: child’s birth certificate, current immunization, Social Security card, W-2 or previous year’s tax return, last two pay check stubs (both parents), DFCS statement of benefits, current Medicaid card or insurance card, most recent health check (vision, hearing, dental) – health department will do the screen for children 18 months and older, proof of residency, and lead test (12 months and/or 24 months).

Only complete applications will be accepted and considered for enrollment. If there are any questions, call 706-554-2036. Community Easter Egg Hunt

A community Easter egg hunt will be held 1-6 p.m., at the old Blakeney building. Admission is free, and activities include bounce house, train ride, water slide, snow cones, dunking booth, kickball, sack races, face painting, food and more.

All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults will be required to sign a waiver in order for kids to participate. Parental Involvement

All Blakeney Elementary School families are invited to come together for “Family Reading Night.” This exciting event will be held at the Blakeney Elementary Library Media Center on Tuesday, April 26, 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The Class of 1991 will host a fish fry fundraiser on Saturday, April 30, at 11a.m., at The Southern Bank Pavilion. They are also selling raffle tickets for $1 each that can also be purchased at the fish fry.

During the course of the fish fry, they will raffle off a $100 gas card for the 1st prize and a $50 gas card for the 2nd prize. Burke County Schools will hold another Pre-K registration for the 2011-2012 school year on 9-11 a.m., Saturday, April 30. It is crucial that you register your child no later than this date to ensure a spot for your child next year.
