Shots fired at officer after party break-up

Police are looking for a man they believe fired twice at an officer early Tuesday morning.

Waynesboro Police were called to break up a fight near the Wardlow Building on Seventh Street, where a graduation party was being hosted.

Though the party was intended for family and friends, a large crowd had gathered on and around the property and several teens began fighting nearby.

Officers intervened, but the boys ran and one of them fired a shot.

When Sgt. Mark Cates saw a gun in the hands of a young black male running from the scene, he drew his weapon and ordered him to stop. Instead, the suspect turned and pulled the trigger twice more in the direction of Sgt. Cates. Officers chased the group as far as Cherry Street but the boys were able to hide among homes in the neighborhood.

Deputy Chief Roosevelt Lodge said they have an idea who the shooting suspect is but are still investigating the case.

When arrested, he will likely be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and discharge of a firearm near a highway.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police at 706-554-8029 or leave an anonymous message on the crime tip hotline, 706-554-8021.
