Exchange Club to host Spring Music Fest Saturday

From Staff Reports

The hits will keep on coming Saturday evening in Waynesboro.

The second annual Spring Music Fest, hosted by the Waynesboro Exchange Club, will bring three popular bands to the stage at the club’s fairgrounds including The Drifters, The Tams and The Swingin’ Medallions. The gates open at 4 p.m. and the Drifters will start the show at 6 o’clock.

The club’s concert chairman Danny Bonnell said he’s looking for a big crowd, possibly twice the size of last year when more than 800 turned out for the show.

“We think our attendance will probably close to double,” he said, noting the addition of The Drifters and plenty of publicity.

After last year’s inaugural event went so well, the club opted to make the Spring Music Fest an annual event. They ramped up marketing efforts this time, bringing in newspaper, radio and television sponsors. WRDW Channel 12 and WKSX, a beach music station out of Johnston, SC, will both have crews at the event. Word of mouth after the first concert also helped drum up excitement for this one.

Bonnell said changes to concessions and adding more onsite VIP parking should make Saturday’s event an even better experience than last year’s.

Planning has been underway since last spring, with dozens of club members pitching in to make it happen.

But the night of music and lineup of great bands really boils down to the local support that has come from the Burke County community, Bonnell said.

“The sponsors are what make this happen. Without sponsorships from local businesses, we would never be able to afford to have The Drifters, The Tams and The Swingin’ Medallions on one stage,” he said. “The local businesses are the key to this whole thing.”

As they look for the event to grow, Exchange Club members also hope it will help bring people and dollars to Waynesboro. More than 90 percent of the online tickets sales have been to out-of-towners from as far away as Fernandina Beach, Fla. And Piedmont, Ala.
