Thunder on Liberty

Downtown Waynesboro will be bumper to bumper next Friday.

Thunder on Liberty is set for April 13, when enthusiasts will motor into town with their classic and custom cars. They’ll line Liberty Street, where onlookers are welcome to check them out and get the stories behind the grandeur from 6-9 p.m. The band Inside Out will crank out rock and roll tunes from the 60s and 70s, and vendors will peddle a host of snacks from smoothies to popcorn during the event as well.

Downtown Development Director Don Lively said he’s looking for plenty of cool cars to be among the mix. He already has commitments for plenty including a dune buggy, a 1930s Ford pick-up and a NASCAR pace car.

The drivers who really wow the crowd will win trophies in categories like People’s Choice and Mayor’s Pick, which Mayor Pauline Jenkins will select as her personal favorite.

Lively said he thinks the event will be a good draw for downtown and appeal to all ages.

“The cars are the stars of the show. Everybody likes cool classic cars,” he said. “But it also gets people out downtown and most businesses are planning to stay open late, so we are encouraging people to eat in the restaurants and visit the shops.”

Lively said News Channel 6 is also planning to send a crew to feature the event in their Your Hometown series.
