Plans are in the making for 2014’s Relay for Life campaign. Organizers gathered last week to start planning the May 2 fundraiser and rounding up volunteers and sponsors. Keynote speaker was U.S. Congressional candidate and cancer survivor John Stone, who worked as the deputy chief of staff under Senator Charlie Norwood while he battled cancer. This year’s theme is “Clubbing for a Cure,” and the objective is for teams to join forces with civic clubs and youth groups. According to Publicity Chair Carrie McCullough a great example would be a Girl Scout troop partnering with a church team.”By the end of our Relay night, the girls will have earned at least one badge … and the appreciation of so many survivors,” she explained. Last year, 22 Burke County teams raised more than $71,000 for cancer research.
