Highway shooting lands teen in hospital, then jail

Nakie Hankerson Nakie Hankerson Deputies are asking for the public's help identifying a gunman who shot into a car of teens.

It happened just before 2 a.m. Saturday when a white truck pulled behind their car on Highway 25 North near Taylor Brothers Express and someone began shooting.

According to Sgt. Dedric Smith, Chief Investigator for the Burke County Sheriff ’s Office, several shots hit the vehicle, including a bullet that punched through the door and hit 19-year-old Nakie Hankerson, who was in the rear passenger seat.

None of the three others in the car were injured.

Hankerson was treated at an Augusta hospital for a wound to his calf. After he was released, he was taken to jail.

Hankerson had been wanted for a number of crimes including multiple felonies under the Family Violence Act.

Among the charges were two felony counts of cruelty to children in the first degree; kidnapping; theft by taking- motor vehicle; burglary; stalking; and several misdemeanors.

As of Tuesday, he was being held without bond.
