On Jan. 2, Steven Michael Dixon, 39, of Black Road in Sardis, was arrested and charged with felony theft of receiving stolen property and felony probation violation.

According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the narcotics division received a tip that morning that Dixon had stolen a tractor and a hydraulic dump trailer from Wade Plantation in Screven County around Dec. 31; however, when investigators contacted Wade Plantation employees, they stated they were unaware of stolen property. Upon checking inventory, employees reported back to the BCSO that a John Deere 5100E tractor (valued at $38,000) was missing as well as a Kuffman hydraulic dump trailer ($6,000).

Following additional tips that afternoon, members of the BCSO narcotics division tracked Dixon to a cotton field off Highway 24 South. According to the report, he was on the tractor at the time but jumped down and ran to a nearby GMC Envoy, driven by an unknown person, and a chase through the cotton field ensued. The vehicle, along with Dixon, were found on Ski Pond Road, but the driver had fled on foot and was not located, the report said.

Officers did recover the stolen trailer, which Dixon had sold, and returned it and the tractor to the owners of Wade Plantation.
