Donald Albert Thomas

Retired SFC Donald Albert Thomas, 89, of Waynesboro, died Jan. 1, 2018, at VAMC Augusta.

Mr. Thomas was born April 17, 1928, in Port Wentworth to John H. Thomas and Marie Carter Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a businessman and owned the Thompson Bridge Grocery.

He was proud of his military service. He was a paratrooper and Special Forces soldier for 22 years. He enlisted at 17, served at the end of WWII and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.

He was a member of American Legion Post 120. He recently lost the love of his life, his Okinawan wife of 53 years, Chiyo Tomai Thomas, and was also preceded in death by his son Tommy Thomas and his parents.

Survivors are Mary Ann Thomas Sapp of Louisville; Joan Duncan (Lee) of Atlanta; Marie Carter Griffin (Billy) of Richmond Hill; Philip Carter (Augusta) of Savannah; Charles Ruiz (Carolyn) of Pooler; and special friends Robert Hall, Beth Corley Hall and Grace Spires.

Funeral services were held in the Burke Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, with the Rev. Thomas Tidwell officiating; Tony McDaniel was part of the service. Visitation was held one hour before the service.

Pallbearers were members of American Legion Post 120. Burial with full military honors followed at Magnolia Cemetery. Arrangements were by Burke Memorial Funeral Home, 842 Liberty St., Waynesboro, GA 30830.
