Bears finish second place in region

The Burke County High School Bears (12-7, 7-3) finished the season second place in Region 3-AAAA. The Bears defeated Thomson last Tuesday, Jan. 30, by a score of 68-59. They were victorious again on Friday night, Feb. 2, as they beat the Hephzibah Rebels, 58-47. The Bears start will play in the 3-AAAA region tournament on Thursday, Feb. 8 in Baldwin.

Head coach Purvis Dukes said that the guys are playing hard and improving each week.

“As the tourney approaches, we have to fix the little things and continue playing hard,” he said.

Leading the Bears against Thomson last Tuesday were seniors Simeon Coleman with 24 points, Deontae Carter, 14 points, and Zayveon Williams, 13. Junior Jahleel Roundtree had 6 points with 14 rebounds which was huge for the team. Williams also had 6 assists on the night.

Against Hephzibah on Friday night, Williams led the Bears in scoring with 17 points, followed by Coleman and Carter with 16 each. Carter also had 14 boards on the night followed by Coleman with 11. Williams led the team again with 5 assists and Carter and Coleman each had 3 steals on the night.

UP NEXT

Burke County will play in the region tourney in Milledgeville on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 5:30 p.m. They will face off against the winner of the Cross Creek/Thomson game which was played on last night (Tuesday, Feb. 6). Those results were not available at press time.
