Sophomore Bailey Jones puts it up strong for the Lady Spartans. Sophomore Bailey Jones puts it up strong for the Lady Spartans. Flu season struck the Lady Spartans of Edmund Burke Academy, and they found themselves without two starters and three bench players when they faced the Lady Crusaders of Trinity Christian last Tuesday. The Lady Spartans could only muster up 9 points against the Lady Crusaders, leading them to a 32-9 loss.

“We’ve been hanging on for a week, and the flu finally hit us and it hit us hard,” said head coach Larry Keller. “We played hard; we just couldn’t make anything.”

Junior Marley Knight played a stellar defensive game, pulling down her season high with 11 rebounds. Senior Caroline McTeer grabbed 6.

The Lady Spartans traveled to Statesboro on Friday, Feb. 2, in hopes of gaining their second region win, but were faced with a tough loss of 58-43. A strong first half found the game knotted at halftime 29-29. The Lady Gators drained 14 three-pointers against the Lady Spartans, who were unable to keep up with their offense. “The Lady Gators got hot, and we couldn’t help that. We played well offensively and defensively. They made a lot of threes with a hand in their face. I couldn’t ask for better defense than that,” commented Keller.

Junior Rylee Cook had 9 points for the Lady Spartans followed by her teammates Knight and sophomore Claudia Post, who each had 8 points. Senior Sydney Quick also hit 2 three- pointers against the Gators. Senior Hannah Powell grabbed 8 rebounds on the defensive end of the floor for the Lady Spartans.

EBA finished the three-game week with a non-region win against Thomas Jefferson on Saturday, Feb. 3, defeating the Lady Jags 41-21.

“A nice win after a tough week with two road games and battling the flu. I think the flu won,” Keller said, adding that 10 players scored against TJA.

Post came off the bench and led the team in scoring and in steals, putting up 11 points and 3 steals. Freshman Anslie Glisson grabbed 10 strong rebounds.

The Lady Spartans played Pinewood’s Lady Patriots on Tuesday night, Feb. 6, but results were not available at press time.
