The Burke County High School Bears track team competed in the state track meet May 10-12 at Berry College in Rome. BCHS was well represented at the meet, and head coach Purvis Dukes said the athletes did an awesome job of competing in the events that they were entered in.

“Damari Kelly is the state runner-up in the 100, and our boys 4x100 relay team is also the state runner-up,” Dukes said. “The girls placed seventeenth overall in the state, and the boys placed ninth overall. We had several kids to have their best performances at this meet.”

For the girls, Kianni Westbrook finished sixth place in the 100H with a time of 16.15 seconds, as her personal best. She also placed eighth in the high jump with a distance of 5 feet.

Qua’Neshia Hamilton took third place in the long jump (18’-2”) and placed sixth in the triple jump (36’-6¾”), recording personal bests in both events. Hamilton has the top returning long jump distance in 4A.

For the boys, Montavian Taylor, Leon Mcgee, Simeon Coleman, Damari Kelly and Dymon Green were the state runner-ups in the 4x100 with a time of 42.34. Kelly’s state runner-up finish in the 100 was a personal best (10.7), and he also tied for third place in the triple jump (44’-5”). Kelly also placed seventh in the long jump (22’-¼”).

On a side note, Dukes said Kelly has issued a challenge for one last race against his dad, Jimmy Kelly, in 100m.
