Panel votes to honor Crockett


R. Wayne Crockett R. Wayne Crockett The Burke County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday requesting that the state designate a portion of Highway 56 North in honor of former board chairman Wayne Crockett.

Crockett, who died in May 2017, had served on the panel for 16 years. The resolution reads as follows:

A resolution requesting that the Georgia General Assembly designate a portion of State Highway 56, the R. Wayne Crockett Highway

Whereas, R. Wayne Crockett was one of Burke County’s most respected and trusted businessmen throughout his lifetime; and

Whereas, R. Wayne Crockett served for 16 years on the Burke County Board of Commissioners including 8 years as Chairman; and

Whereas, R. Wayne Crockett served for 24 years on the Board of Edmund Burke Academy; and

Whereas, R. Wayne Crockett led efforts to ensure the financial viability of the Burke Medical Center; and

Whereas, R. Wayne Crockett worked diligently to establish an animal control program for Burke County.

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Burke County Board of Commissioners respectfully requests that the Georgia General Assembly designate a portion of State Highway 56 between Brier Creek and Old Waynesboro Road to be named in honor of R. Wayne Crockett.

Be it further resolved that the county clerk is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Senator Jesse Stone and Representative Gloria Frazier.
