While both teams may not have come out on top, the Bears have moved on to the state competition in tennis. The boys claimed their second region title in the school’s history on Wednesday, and the girls finished as the region runner-up.

As the tourney, which was hosted by Burke County High School, began, the girls competed in the first round against Thomson, securing three wins (both doubles team and #3 singles) to advance to the championship match against ARC.

“Both doubles teams won their matches pretty quickly,” said head coach Laurie Dickey, adding that the doubles teams were instrumental in the region tournament and that she appreciates all of their effort in both matches. In singles, Paige Allen and Doris Cross were up in their matches against ARC, but their opponents were able to come back and beat them.

“Paige went shot for shot with her opponent, and Doris took her match to three sets, but wasn't able to win it in the end,” Dickey said. “She had a very long match and showed a lot of composure. During the regular season, her opponent beat her 6-0, 6-0 so I was extremely pleased with the development of her game during this season.”

The boys also went up against ARC in the championship game, with all three singles players and #2 doubles defeating their opponents to secure the region title. The players worked together and played aggressively to make the win possible, and Dickey says the singles players played their best matches of the entire season. “They were very focused and took care of business on the court. Aaron Baulos, David Skinner and Lindy Hurst were very impressive in their matches. I think this will give them a lot of confidence going into the first round of the state tournament.”

“I am proud of every player on the team,” Dickey continued. “Great sportsmanship was shown; all were focused on their matches; everyone had great encouragement from their teammates, and I know that this team is ready to keep doing great things. Thanks to Coach Daniel Hance for his help this season and the support of the parents.”

The Bears will host the first round of state competition for both the boys and girls teams beginning next week.
